Birthday Cards for Bowe - America’s lone POW

January 29, 2014. Hailey, ID. Calling all American parents - all 263 million of you. Pretend your young son or daughter was taken prisoner by the Taliban while serving their country. Now pretend you’ve been terrorized by fear every second of the past 234 weeks - that’s over four years! That’s how long the parents of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl - America’s lone POW - have been trying to bring their son home. Now, they need your help.

POW Bowe Bergdahl's 28th birthday is this March 28th.

‘On June 30, 2009, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was captured by the Taliban in Afghanistan. His family, and indeed the entire city of Hailey, Idaho, have pressed for his negotiated release ever since. Now, three years later, Bergdahl’s friends, family and neighbors are sensing their last chance to get him home are slipping away.’ - Whiteout Press wrote and published that paragraph almost two years ago. And yet here we are, still desperately trying to bring America’s only POW home to his family. Now, more than ever, this 27-year-old American POW needs you.

One Million Birthday Cards for Bowe

“We made a statement to the White House at Christmas - now it’s time to make a statement to Idaho’s Senators and Congressmen that they need to stand up and help us get Bowe home to his mom and dad,” says Debbie O’Neil in her recent call to action. For those unaware, it was only a few months ago that supporters of America’s POW flooded the White House with holiday cards for Bowe. The goal was to remind President Obama and the White House that our nation still has a POW out there being held by the enemy. And America wants him back.

“Okay folks! It’s time to do something a little different,” O’Neil goes on to explain to all those wondering what they can do to help bring our POW home, “We inundated the White House with Christmas Cards for Bowe. Now it’s time to let Bowe’s own Representatives here in Idaho know that it’s time they lobby to get Bowe home to his family and friends here in Hailey, Idaho. We are proud to be announcing the One Million Cards for Bowe Birthday Card campaign.”

How you can help

Organizers of the Birthday Cards for Bowe campaign have a couple requests for those who’d like to help out and send a few birthday cards. First, do not put Bowe Bergdahl’s name anywhere on the outside of the envelope. Second, if you aren’t one of the elected officials’ constituents, don’t put your name or address in the ‘return address’ area. We presume both requests are to hopefully keep the office staffers from simply ignoring the mail as soon as they see what it is or that it’s from outside their district.

Idaho has two US Senators and two US Representatives. Bowe’s family and supporters are asking that Americans send birthday cards for Bowe directly to them. Again, Bowe Bergdahl’s 28th birthday will be on March 28. Readers have plenty of time, but please don’t forget or put it off too long. Their four local Idaho Congressional office addresses are below (from BringBoweBack2014.com):

Congressman Raúl Labrador
33 E. Broadway Avenue

Congressman Mike Simpson

Senator James Risch

Twin Falls, ID 83301

Senator Mike Crapo

In their own words

“Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Bowe Bergdahl and his family. His safe return has always been of the utmost importance to us, and his well-being is something we raise with senior administration officials whenever possible. We are following recent potential developments about him very closely.” - Rep. Raul Labrador in a joint statement with Idaho’s US Congressional delegation on June 20, 2013. (Editors note: We couldn’t find a single official statement from Rep. Labrador concerning Bowe Bergdahl other than the entire delegation’s joint statement).

Idaho is proud of our men and women in the active duty military and Idaho National Guard who are serving our country honorably at home and abroad and of the veterans who served our nation. We thank them for their great service to our nation, and we recognize the sacrifices that they and their families make to protect our freedoms and way of life. Just as they served our nation in its time of need, our country must remember them in their time of need.” - Rep. Mike Simpson on his Congressional website. (Editors Note: We couldn’t find a single official statement from Rep. Simpson concerning Bowe Bergdahl other than repeated news reports stating, “Congressman Simpson did not respond to requests for a statement).

“June 30th was the fourth anniversary of captivity for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl of Hailey. He is being held by Taliban-affiliated groups on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. All Idahoans need to continue keeping Bowe and the Bergdahl family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult ordeal. The community of Hailey has offered tremendous support to the family during this time. Another Idahoan, Pastor Saeed Abedini, of Boise, was seized by the Iranian government and sentenced to eight years in Evin prison for allegedly spreading Christianity. He was in Iran visiting family and working to build orphanages. I had the opportunity to record a video message through Voice of America to the people of Iran during their presidential elections.  I spoke to them about freedom and Pastor Saeed. During a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, I quizzed State Department officials on efforts to secure Pastor Abedini's release.” - Sen. James Risch in a July 17, 2013 press release (Editors note: We only included the second half of the Senator’s paragraph because we wondered if he’s made any videos, spoke to the people of Afghanistan/Pakistan or quizzed State Department officials on Bowe’s behalf).

“My thoughts and prayers continue to be with Bowe and his family. I continue to follow developments about him closely and press for his safe return, raising this issue with senior administration officials whenever possible.” - Sen. Mike Crapo in a November 25, 2013 press release. (Editors note: It’s almost the exact same wording as the entire Congressional delegation’s statement five months earlier. Also, Sen. Crapo goes on to tout his sponsorship of legislation calling on Iran to free the above-mentioned Pastor Saeed. Again, we wondered if Sen. Crapo authored any legislation to bring home America’s one and only POW).

Final thoughts

As the movement to bring Bowe Bergdahl home grows, additional events and campaigns are occurring on a regular basis. Organizers have already begun working on this summer’s annual ‘Bring Back Bowe Ride’. Motorcycle enthusiasts are just one of many segments of America that have come out strong in support of America’s POW. In June, more than 1,500 bikers are expected to descend upon Hailey, Idaho for this year’s ride.

Another issue that has arisen for the Bergdahl family is their ability to attend the various events for their son. The passion to bring Bowe home has spread to every state in the nation. Occasionally, there are events held in other parts of the country and Bowe’s parents are always invited and urged to attend. They want to and often do. But the Bergdahl family is like any other - they’re not rich. Therefore, supporters have set up a donation page on the group’s website where people can send a few dollars to help cover the transportation costs for the Bergdahls to attend events in support of their son.
